What is Yoga?

Literally, the meaning of the word ‘yoga’ is ‘union’, a series of exercises in which to develop harmony between the mind and body, thus creating balance and body awareness.

Yoga is beneficial for:
  • General fitness and body awareness
  • Building strength
  • Increasing flexibility
  • Improving balance and posture
  • Enhancing concentration, confidence and relaxation
  • Ante and post natal fitness
Developed in India more than 5000 years ago, Yoga is becoming more and more popular as people are becoming more educated in the numerous benefits of this particular discipline.

By holding certain poses, Yoga has been designed to keep the internal organs healthy and ease conditions such as back pain and arthritis. Using Yoga can lead to a happy, positive attitude and increase in self esteem.

Rebecca Valins has many years experience in the fitness industry. Included in her extensive CV are aerobics, step, swissball, and nutrition. Rebecca is a qualified Yoga teacher who is also ante and post natal trained. She is extremely well versed in all aspects of fitness and a valuable member of our team.

Valerie Thomas is a professional dancer, with many years experience as a personal trainer. Amongst her many fitness qualifications, Valerie is also a Freestyle Yoga Instructor who is extremely informative and thorough in her teaching.

We also have Yoga instructors Robert, Nikki and Andrea-all kinds of yoga practice is available.


What is the Pilates method?

The Pilates method is not just a series of exercises, but a complete approach to developing physical awareness in day to day life. It is designed to improve and change the body’s postural and alignment habits and is also specifically designed to be carried out in a confined space.

The Pilates method is beneficial for:
  • General fitness and body awareness
  • Prevention of injury
  • Remedial and rehabilitation work
  • Ante and post natal fitness in pregnancy
  • Fitness for the elderly and children over 12 years old
pilates ball Pilates assists in increasing and creating a balance between strength and flexibility. It creates an awareness of and strengthening of core stability. Not only does Pilates significantly improve coordination and posture, but it also helps in releasing stress.

Pilates is a holistic and unique approach to exercise, encompassing such a philosophy of principles which set this type of training aside from many other forms of exercise.

Sophie Ackroyd has spent a number of years as a Personal Trainer. In addition to aerobics, dance, body conditioning and stretch, Sophie also specialises in ante and post natal Pilates. She is an easygoing, popular member of our team.

Robert Obosi has been qualified as a personal trainer since 2003. He has a comprehensive CV which not only includes Pilates but boxercise, kickboxing, weights, nutrition, self defence and much more. Robert will really push you and work you hard!

Magda Amatori has an extensive fitness background including Pilates. She covers ante and postnatal fitness and is newly qualified in holistic massage, which she combines with her fitness instruction. She is fun and laid back, and is constantly on the look out for new ways in which to update her skills.
